During this time, artists rejected realism, emphasizing self-expression and use of different unique materials and techniques that stood out.

Key Movements:

  • Impressionism (Monet, Degas): Focus on light, color, and everyday subjects.

  • Cubism (Picasso, Braque): Abstracted forms broken into geometric shapes.
  • Futurism, Dada, Surrealism: Challenged norms, explored chaos, subconscious, and dreams.

Abstract Art (Early 20th Century – Present)

Abstract art evolved from modernism, focusing on non-representational forms. Instead of depicting recognizable objects, abstract artists convey mood, energy, and structure through shapes, lines, and colors.

Types of Abstract Art:

  • Geometric Abstraction (Mondrian): Clear, structured compositions.
  • Lyrical Abstraction (Kandinsky): Emotional, expressive brushwork and color.
  • Action Painting (Pollock): Emphasis on the physical act of painting.
  • Color Field Painting (Rothko): Large swaths of color to evoke spiritual or emotional responses.
