Bringing All American History to Life
These days it is getting harder and harder to find good and accurate American History curriculum. While there is a plethora of world history in the academic world, finding age appropriate history books is a challenge. We have found many books over the years that have been a great resource.
Although there are history books of all kinds, elementary is what has been the hardest. Below are three units I have created for elementary and middle school age to get good, solid American History information taught in fun and creative ways.
General American History Unit:
- For younger kids – I did a numbering system and let them paste on the page, give them one or two word sections to fill in like names etc.
- For older kids – they can do the cutting and gluing themselves and give them more deeper questions.
- This includes 26 Lessons for 3rd-5th grade level on average depending on skill and interest
- Create a working journal to make the information more digestible
- Free printable packet for journal pages
- Fill in the blanks: names dates, major events and content as you read
- Many variations to make interactive notebook exciting and engaging!
Early Settlers Unit:
- For elementary and older elementary (can vary-some activities require computer use)
- Used Southwestern Advantage to aid in the content
- Simple and elementary aged lessons for American content
- Learn about the settlers and world travelers finding America
- Short and various reading books of all types, activities and videos/websites/resources
American Revolution Unit:
- Self created four unit study that can span over many months
- Geared towards middle school age
- Notetaking skills, research skills and essay writing
- Detailed breakdown of the North, South and Middle colony battles
- Intensive reading and teaching beginning analysis of history concepts
